Background

Enhancing Financial Innovation & Access (EFInA) is a leading financial sector development organisation working to promote financial ] inclusion in Nigeria. Established in late 2007, EFInA’s vision is to be the leader in facilitating an all-inclusive and growth-promoting financial system. EFInA is funded by the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

EFInA is well renowned within Nigeria’s financial sector for providing thought leadership in financial inclusion and championing the unbanked. Through funding and catalysing innovation, providing cutting-edge research, advocating for enabling inclusive policies and building capacity, EFInA has built a reputation as an ‘honest broker’ amongst both the private and public sectors.  Data from the EFInA Access to Financial Services in Nigeria surveys was a key source of information in the development of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s National Financial Inclusion Strategy; and is also widely used by a diverse range of stakeholders, including regulators, as a benchmark for financial inclusion in Nigeria. Furthermore, financial services providers use EFInA’s research to develop a range of relevant financial products through gaining insights and understanding of consumers’ needs.

EFInA aims to achieve its goals through four pillars namely: Research, Innovation, Advocacy and Capacity Building.

Job Objectives

  • Responsible for all EFInA’s quantitative and qualitative research and managing the organisation’s evidence/research/database, which informs the strategic development of Financial Inclusion in Nigeria
  • Lead EFInA commissioned research and policy analysis initiatives, as well as provide technical assistance to research and policy components embedded within specific projects/programmes
  • Drive and support knowledge and insights activities for EFInA and be responsible and accountable for availability and quality of knowledge assets contained in all of EFInA’s commissioned research.

Job Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Programme Leads to generate and use research to identify the challenges faced by Nigeria’s unbanked and under-banked population, including any short comings in financial education; obstacles to innovation; regulatory hurdles; and financial institutions’ lack of capacity or capability. Consistently uses these research findings to drive and support EFInA’s programme activities, stimulate product innovation in the financial sector and provide evidence for policy reforms
  • Lead the design and implementation of all EFInA commissioned primary & secondary research and policy analysis. Ensure all EFInA’s research projects are delivered to high quality standards by specified deadline
  • Ensure EFInA’s data research supports the organisation’s strategic initiatives by providing required evidence that will guide EFInA’ s annual strategic business plan
  • Synthesise lessons learned from research findings of EFInA surveys and scoping studies conducted and draw implications and/or conclusions that are actionable, impactful and accessible to stakeholders, in the form of policy/strategy/technical notes
  • Provide insightful and meaningful data to the Programmes Team to support the evaluation of proposals received
  • Work with the Communication Specialist to distil and disseminate EFInA’s primary research to relevant stakeholders. This will include implementing effective communication channels for engaging each category of EFInA’s stakeholders, the appropriate dissemination channels for all research commissioned and presenting research findings in a compelling and informative manner, e.g. by developing presentations, writing reports, producing brochures, developing infographics/short videos, contributing to research publications, etc.
  • Work with the Communications Specialist in developing and executing effective marketing strategies for key stakeholders that increases awareness of the issues limiting the growth of financial inclusion and provide recommendations for addressing these issues
  • As required, contribute to EFInA’s knowledge management by facilitating knowledge sharing sessions, creating training materials and ensuring these materials are consistently saved to the Group Folder for ease of reference and retrieval of information
  • Lead, coach, and mentor all direct reports to ensure customer focus and high standards of delivery
  • Ensure that the Research team keeps abreast of new local and global trends and developments in research/analysis methods & presentation, and other financial inclusion related sectors
  • Ensure that any output from the Research team meets EFInA’s high standards of delivery
  • Work with the HR & Admin Officer to develop annual training plans for the Research team for approval by the Chief Executive Officer
  • Monitor, manage and report on the performance of all direct reports including setting performance objectives and timelines and conducting monthly reviews and annual performance appraisals
  • Performs any other duties as required by the Chief Executive Officer

Essential Knowledge & Experience

  • Deep knowledge of insight capabilities which encourage customer-centricity as well as of contemporary qualitative & quantitative research approaches to Financial Inclusion
  • Deep experience in managing research firms or departments, and the ability to conduct statistical modelling
  • Experience in implementing or leading large national surveys and research projects and knowledge of a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods with extensive experience in:
    • Conducting fieldwork such as in-depth interviews and focus group discussions
    • Designing research guides, survey tools and questionnaires
    • Developing analysis frameworks
    • Research and survey administration, data management and data analysis
  • Strong competency in using statistical software such as SPSS, Stata
  • Excellent Communications skills (Verbal, Written & Graphic) for impactful messaging
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of research trends in financial sector development
  • Ability to build partnerships across stakeholder groups
  • Presentation and data interpretation skills
  • Proven project management skills

Educational Qualification            

Master’s degree in Economics, Statistics, International development, or any relevant degree
